Sector Information
Sector 7

This diverse area encompasses "The Avenues" - Monroe Avenue, Park Avenue, East Avenue, University Avenue as well as the Neighborhood of the Arts.

Its neighborhoods range from some of the most expensive to some of Rochester's more neglected areas. It stretches from Winton Road to Alexander Street, from the railroad line at Main Street to 490 on the south. It includes a variety of residential and commercial areas as well as many of Rochester's cultural mainstays, including the Memorial Art Gallery, The International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House, Visual Studies Workshop, Writers and Books and Rochester's newest museum, ARTWalk on University Avenue.

Sector 8

Sector 8 is a large, socially and economically diverse area in the northeast quadrant. Bordered by North Goodman Street on the west, the City line on the north and east and the Conrail railroad tracks on the south.

The Beechwood neighborhood, which shares borders with Sectors 10 and 7, is the lowest income area within the sector, where according to 1990 Census data, 49% of the households received some form of public assistance. According to 2001 Rochester City School District statistics, Audubon School #33 (which services the Beechwood neighborhood) has 1200 students of whom 97% are at or below poverty level. This makes the school the largest and most impoverished grade school in Monroe Avenue. North East Area Development, the community association in Sector 8, takes a comprehensive, community-driven approach to address quality of life issues (in housing, crime prevention, zoning and community organizing) that seem to prey on low-income areas.

Sector 10

Three neighborhoods comprise Sector 10 in Northeast Rochester: Upper Falls, North Marketview Heights and South Marketview Heights. These neighborhoods strikingly reveal the effects of systematic urban disinvestments and material deprivation.

The residents of Sector 10 deal with this reality: In the 1990 Census, the 11 census tracks comprising Sector 10 were the largest contiguous group of low-income census tracts in the 15 county Genesee Finger Lakes Region of Central Western New York; 93.4% of Sector 10 residents are multicultural people of color, including 58.5% African American and 31.7% Hispanic origin; in 1990 the median household income was roughly $13,000 per year, as compared to about $35,000 for Monroe
County; there are very low rates of home ownership and business ownership.

The NorthEast Neighborhood Alliance serves as the Sector Planning Committee for Sector 10. The NENA is a comprehensive neighborhood develop initiative. Our vision calls for "a future better than our children's dreams." Our values reflect
self-reliance and neighborhood wealth formation in Sector 10 through ownership of the means of production and exchange

Sector Demographics

The demographics of Sectors 7, 8, and 10 provide a rich and potentially strong range of metaphors affording the opportunity to bridge economic gaps as well as multi racial and ethnic backgrounds.

As part of the City of Rochester's award winning 2010 Renaissance Plan, the city is divided into 10 sectors. This proposed project is at the crossroads of Sectors 7, 8, and 10. To highlight the differences among the three sectors and their neighborhoods:
